Jon Favreau has developed a knack for big budget entertainment in recent years, but for his latest film he’s scaling things back and returning to the storytelling roots that made him a household name.
Chef, which debuted at SXSW, was written and directed by Favreau. He also happens to star in the film, alongside an immediately lovable cast that includes Robert Downey, Jr., Sofia Vergara, John Leguizamo, Bobby Cannavale, Dustin Hoffman, Oliver Platt,and Scarlett Johansson. The film tells the story of a man who realizes the importance of creative integrity and flees the security of a high-profile career in search of his independent dreams, which is not exactly new ground in cinema, but the first trailer promises plenty of memorable moments and likable performances. The official synopsis reads:
When Chef Carl Casper (Jon Favreau) suddenly quits his job at a prominent Los Angeles restaurant after refusing to compromise his creative integrity for its controlling owner (Dustin Hoffman), he is left to figure out what’s next. Finding himself in Miami, he teams up with his ex-wife (Sofia Vergara), his friend (John Leguizamo) and his son to launch a food truck. Taking to the road, Chef Carl goes back to his roots to reignite his passion for the kitchen—and zest for life and love.
Chef opens May 9. We have not screened the film yet, but the initial reviews out of SXSW were fairly positive. I think it’s pretty clear where the story is headed, but with films like this the journey is the most important part. Here’s hoping the final product is as good as this trailer.
